It’s a super comfortable learning environment and everyone is very willing to help
I would highly recommend Culture Yard to anyone serious about studying Chinese
CY had everything I was looking for: community, location, cool factor and a focus on everyday communication.
Studying here was one of the greatest experiences of my life – the hutong is like a small neighborhood, and CY feels like a home.
At Culture Yard, I felt comfortable at once. Maybe also because of the capacity to adapt to the students’ needs. Every student counts, teachers are very good, very dedicated, and admin works smoothly.
Classes at Culture Yard saw me through Beijing’s cold Beijing winter mornings! The syllabus is structured and challenging and the environment relaxed and friendly. You will absolutely see rapid improvements in your Chinese in no time. I couldn’t recommend Culture Yard enough to any one looking to improve their Chinese – whatever your level.
LETTERS FROM CY STUDENTS
I wanted to thank you for giving me a chance to work with Xia Jing. She is top, understands exactly what I need and is a pleasure to study with. I look forward to working with her whenever you can spare her upon my return to Beijing.
I just wanted to thank all my teachers in CY and let them know that I passed the HSK 2 (score 192/200). Also thank you for all your help organizing classes etc. the time I lived in Beijing. You are a wonderful team.
I enjoy my time at Culture Yard because the staff is great, the teachers are friendly, and they always have a comfy place to curl up with a cup of tea; but at the end of the day I’m there to learn Chinese. I will continue to be a part of Culture Yard because I cannot imagine a more effective way for me to study.
It took me a couple months of living in Beijing before I decided to take Chinese classes. I looked at a few options and decided to throw my chips in with Culture Yard. They were convenient and inexpensive, and I liked the atmosphere for studying in a hutong courtyard.
At first I signed up for one course. I really enjoyed my teacher and classmates, so we all ended up signing up for the next course. It is 6 months later and I am still studying here. I’m at a point in my Chinese language learning where I can read and write short passages and have extended conversations on a variety of topics.
I wanted to come to China to learn something about the language and culture. Now that I am able to meet new friends who are not able to speak English, a whole new world is opening up.
I like the familiar atmosphere in this homelike language school in the hutong, where you get a smile and a coffee in the morning before class . My teacher encourages me not just to stare at a book and prepare for the HSK exam, but to not be scared to speak!
The adventure of living in Beijing started for me when I talked to my Chinese neighbors for the first time. That had been maybe two or three weeks after my first classes at Culture Yard. Well, I think, they did not understand everything I wanted to say : ) but I go on working on my language skills (and tones!). I have group course 2 hours/day in the morning, my treasury of word grows fast and I get more and more confident. My teacher helps me with a big heart and patience and my new Chinese friends in the neighborhood with the homework!
From the beginning Culture Yard was one of my top choices. I visited a few other schools to ensure I was making a well rounded choice but from the moment I walked up the hutong and into Culture Yard’s door I was sold.
Taking cabs was my biggest fear because I couldn’t communicate any more than what characters I was able to copy from Google Translate or butcher verbally. After 3 weeks at CY I was hailing cabs left and right. Score 1: Whitney.
I did an intensive course in Mandarin of 80 hours over 10 days and although it was very tiring, I really enjoyed it. They organized a number of different teachers each with their own different styles and personalities which made it more interesting for me.
Each day, I also took part in a small group lesson for 2 hours which was also a lot of fun. I feel I have made a lot of progress in such a short time and if you are thinking of taking a similar approach as I, I would just say “Go for it!”
More than two years of study at Culture Yard is hard to sum up in a bite-sized blurb. Effective? Their friendly and very experienced teachers create a comfortable learning environment that leaves you more confident with every class.
Convenient? No matter how my schedule shaped up, Culture Yard’s flexibility meant I could continue studying wherever the time fit. Worth it? Everykuai.
