Yes, we offer courses from complete Beginner level to HSK 6 (the highest level for the national standardized proficiency exam).
Before your first class, you will take a Chinese level test based on your reading, listening and speaking skills.
The level test is in two parts: the first part is a short online written evaluation, and the second part is a spoken evaluation for which we will schedule a time for you to meet with a teacher.
Your class level will be based on your test results.
We teach our courses mainly in Chinese. However, all of our Chinese teachers can speak English.
You will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of your course, which will show your level of Chinese and the dates and hours for which you have studied.
Every student learns at a different speed, however you should expect to move up a level every 60 hours. From the complete beginner level, you would need 60 hours of lessons to master survival Chinese. Conversational fluency takes around a year of intensive courses.
For a comprehensive understanding of what you’ll learn after each level of courses, see our progress chart below:
|Course Level||# Hours||Total Words||You will be able to:|

Culture Yard students learn through a communicative method of teaching. This means that classroom time is spent on using everyday situations to focus on key language skills, improving tones, and character recognition. Classroom activities reflect real life scenarios and are structured so students communicate as much as possible.
Group class students are tested every 30 hours of lessons. At the end of each group course, you will take a final exam. In order to move on to the next level of classes, students must receive a passing grade of 70% on the final exam.
Private students can request to take the test.
Yes. While our focus is on giving students the skills necessary for real life communication, our HSK level courses also cover the material on the exam, and more.
Returning students receive 500¥ off their next group course when they sign up within 3 months from their last course. We also offer referral discounts — refer a friend to study with us and you BOTH get a 200¥ voucher. For private students, the more hours you book, the bigger your discount will be.
