Before your first class, you will take a Chinese evaluation on your reading, listening and speaking skills. Your class level will be based on your test results.
We teach our courses mainly in Chinese. However all of our Chinese teachers can speak English.
You will receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of your course, which will show your level of Chinese, the dates on which you have studied and your attendance.
Every student learns at a different speed, however you should expect to move up a level every 6 weeks.
From complete beginner level, you would need 6 weeks of daily classes to master survival Chinese. Conversational fluency would take around a year on the Intensive Program.
Culture Yard students learn through a communicative method of teaching. This means that classroom time is spent on using everyday situations to focus on key language skills, improving tones and character recognition. Classroom activities reflect real situations, and are structured so students communicate as much as possible.
Students are tested every 3 weeks and 6 weeks move up to the next level depending on how well they do on the exam.
All of our Chinese classes follow the ‘Experiencing Chinese’ course book series, which focuses on the language you need for practical, real-life situations.
Our courses do not provide systematic exam training. We focus on useful, real-life daily communication. If you want to take the HSK exam, we can also arrange a private teacher to prepare you using exam-specific vocabulary and exam strategies.
